Ministry of Trade, Industry, Wildlife and Tourism
Any investor in Botswana will need to contact the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Wildlife and Tourism. Under the umbrella ministry are the Ministry of Management including the registrar of companies and the promotion of small businesses, the Department of Trade and Consumer Affairs, the Department of Industrial Affairs, the Department of Tourism and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.
Among the objectives of the ministry relevant to investors are:
- Making the optimal use of locally available resources
- Conserving and promoting sustainable utilisation of wildlife resources
- Facilitating the establishment of viable firms and industries
- Facilitating joint ventures between citizens and foreign investors
- Promoting an entrepreneurial and business culture
The ministry is responsible for implementing the industrial development policy, the issue of manufacturing licences, providing industrial support services. The ministry has handed over much of its responsibilities for the promotion of foreign investment, particularly export oriented activities to the Botswana Export Development and Investment Authority (BEDIA) (see Financial Institutions).

The Department of Tourism within the umbrella ministry is specifically responsible for the:

Ministry of Finance and Development Planning & Bank of Botswana
The Ministry of Finance and Development Planning and the Bank of Botswana are responsible for the overall management of the Botswana economy. The Ministry appoints the members of the Bank board, except for the Governor who is appointed by the President. The Minister reports to parliament on the Bank's operations.
The main functions of the Ministry of Finance are: To develop a sound national development planning machinery to ensure that national economic goals and objectives are obtained. To provide vital information support services to all executing agencies and to the public and private sectors. To provide national leadership and serve as the government focal point for all national policies relating to the economy, finance, development planning and monetary and manpower policies.
Its specific functions are the coordination and preparation of:
- The national development plans
- Development projects
- Development and recurrent budgets
- Auditing of government financial operations
Bank of Botswana
The main functions of the Bank of Botswana include the:
- Conduct of monetary policy
- Central Banking and clearance systems for the commercial banks
- Supervision of the banks and other financial institutions
- Issuance of currency
- Exchange rate policy
- Management of foreign exchange reserves
- Economic analysis and policy advice
- Regulation and supervision of the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC)
The Bank maintains constant regulatory surveillance and effective controls over the domestic financial system while encouraging greater competition, improved services and accessibility for the benefit of the public.

Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water
The Ministry is in charge of the minerals, energy and water sectors. It comprises departments of mines, water affairs and geological survey.
It is also responsible for the parastatals of the Botswana Power Corporation and the Water Utilities Corporation.
It devises short and long term strategies to carry out national policies on minerals, energy and water resources. It liases with government, private and international agencies.

Ministry of Agriculture
The Ministry is responsible for carrying out government policies on agricultural and livestock production and conservation. It has departments in charge of:

Ministry of Works, Transport and Communications
The ministry provides transport and communications infrastructure, buildings for public institutions, roads, railways and airports. It is also responsible for the telecommunications and postal networks. It comprises seven departments and is in charge of five parastatals.
These are the departments of Roads, Transport and Road safety, Civil Aviation, the Central Transport Organisation, Architectural and Building Services, Electrical and Mechanical Services and Meteorological Services.
The parastatals are Air Botswana, Botswana Railways, Botswana Postal Services, Botswana Telecom-munications Corporation and the Botswana Telecommunications Authority.
